How was the Women’s Film Festival?

The 2008 Women’s Film Festival in Brattleboro was a jolt to winter doldrums with thought-provoking, enlightening and entertaining films about women — almost all made by women.
Far from the usual Hollywood fare, the festival lineup shines a light on real issues of real people — with great artfulness, grit, and the occasional spice of [...]

Bucket List Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman
This is a pretty decent film. I enjoyed it. The acting is great (as one might suspect), which gives the film some super brownie points. I think if it hadn’t been cast with two Academy Award winners, I would not have enjoyed it as much.

Cloverfield: A thrill ride

CloverfieldRegardless of what any sappy critic or animal rights activist says about films being a form of art or a gateway into a persons mind and experiences, the primary purpose of a movie is to entertain. It is a solid form of entertainment. Usually you can tell if a film is entertaining by whether or not Universal Studios has made a roller coaster out of it. Cloverfield is a movie that needs no coaster to prove its worth. What is put together is a roller coaster on screen.

Cloverfield is pure, raw entertainment, regardless of how good the directing or acting or scripting or casting or any other lame details were.

Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox StoryJohn C. Reilly plays Dewey Cox, a young boy who accidentally chops his incredibly talented brother in half in a freak machete fight accident and must be “double good for the both of em.’” Dewey’s exiled from home for introducing rock music to his home town. He hit’s the road and joins up with a band comprised of Tim Meadows, Matt Besser, and Chris Parnell. They release a smash hit single and are swept into the world of rock stardom.

“Walk Hard” is the funniest parody film I think I’ve ever seen.

Ellen Page of JunoIt’s been over a year since ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ hit the big screen, and I think the world got a little brighter that day. But it’s about time a new indie-based comedy stepped up to the plate to warm our hearts in a new way. Could ‘Juno’ be that movie?

tommy-lee-jones.jpg Josh Brolin plays your run-of-the-mill everyday Joe, out on one of his solo hunting trips, when he comes across a bag packed with Franklins. Two-hundred million in Franklins to be exact. Well what’s so intense and/or grim about that happy-go-lucky situation? You might ask. Well, you didn’t let me finish. It turns out, The most insane psychotic killer in the history of mental illness (Javier Bardem) also wants the money… he also knows where Brolin lives… he also has a high powered, hair trigger shotgun with a 50 pound silencer… he also carries around an air compressor (normally used to kill cows) to open locks and for other bloody means… and he also… well, I won’t ruin it for you.

Caught in the middle of all of this mindless killing, chasing and carnage is Tommy Lee Jones, a poor old Texas sheriff whose time has come and gone, wanting only to retire and escape the horrors of the modern day, but must first deal with the most extreme evil… that I’ve ever seen, anyway.

30daysofnight.jpgLet’s get something straight before I start.

Samuel Danger Allen is a Comic Book fan first, Movie fan second, so in some cases I can be more lenient on films based on comics and others I can be more critical.

Now that that’s out of the way, 30 Days of Night is a film by David Slade based on a Graphic Novel by Steve Niles (who also wrote the screenplay, hmm…). It stars that hunk we all love, Josh Hartnett, who usually plays a cutie pie. Before seeing the film, he seemed a bit out of place, but he certainly pulled it off.
